Derail TRAIN II!

Ninfa Leonardia

Yesterday was the anniversary of that horrible day in New York City when its prized Twin Towers were hit by suicide planes and caused the death of innumerable people, not only New Yorkers, or even Americans, but from several other countries worldwide. Sad to say, even now, 17 years after, not all those who perished in that holocaust, have been identified, although the effort to do so still continues.

That was another act that could be tagged as another proof of man’s inhumanity to man. Only heartless, senseless beasts could be capable of doing it! And the whole world watched as the attack was going on, thanks to modern technology and the alertness of those who were on the outside, watching the horror of people jumping out of the multi-storey structures – to escape the fire, but not certain death. Latest reports say more than a thousand remain unidentified, and people continue to check with the ones working on it, to see if their missing kin were among the victims.

For our family, the most terrible time were the hours when we waited to hear from our loved ones there if they were safe. We knew that none of them were working in those buildings, but what if they had business there on that very day, that very hour? Thankfully, they soon made contact, one after the other, and each time we heard from them, prayed in thanksgiving. But we also remembered to pray for those who were there and for their chances of survival.

Later, stories kept coming, some heartbreaking, other comical. Like that young lady, said to be from Negros, who was a habitual latecomer, who was one of the workers there who survived. Her office building was already in fiery shambles when she arrived to report. Our own niece, Peachy, daughter of brother Pros, told of how she had to run home to Brooklyn, and how she lost a shoe, and a kindhearted person along the way, gave her a pair as she ran past! Now, we can still be helpful, by praying that the scientists working on the identification of the unnamed victims, succeed in their work, and that such a demonic happening never occurs again, anywhere!

Meanwhile, I think someone should advise President Duterte to take a few days to rest and clear his mind of all the problems of state, including, if I may say so, the ones he himself created. Seems the Trillanes case is the last, or one of the last straws that have been bugging him. Also, why does he and his people keep trying to pretend that there is nothing wrong with him physically? Even at the start of his presidency, he had already been admitting to his ailments, and even to the medication he was taking. And some of them are described to be very potent ones.

***

Yesterday, when he addressed the country, many of his listeners, noted that he did not look or sound as if all was well with him. Some even thought he was irrelevant at times. Maybe the thought that the Philippine peso has now reached P53.88 to $1 is bothering him? Well, the people know, and he has admitted he is no economist, so leave that to the experts. If he is afraid that Leni Robredo and not Bongbong Marcos will take over, the more he should take care of his health. Just a friendly advice, Mr. President, Sir!

But perhaps something he can do to ease his problems is to flag down TRAIN II that is said to have passed the House of Representatives already. After all the troubles TRAIN I had brought us, why are we getting another TRAIN? Even if they have changed its name to “Tax Reform for Attracting Better and High Quality Opportunities”, or TRABAHO, what was it that Shakespeare said about the rose by any other name? TRAIN by another name will still stink for the beleaguered Pinoys.

That is why I salute those members of Congress who either abstained, or boldly voted “NO” to the measure. They are the ones who feel the pulse of the people, and we should be thankful we still have congressmen like them. The 17 should be acknowledged by everyone for their bravery. May their tribes increase!*
