Little League Philippines tournament director Chito Gonzales said yesterday that Dumaguete City is now the permanent home of the league in the Visayas.
This is in recognition to the support of Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo to the grassroots baseball and softball programs, with the firm belief that athletes have the potentials to be world champions.
Councilor Michael Bandal said that hosting Little League Visayas reinforces the city's thrust to make it the next sports tourism hub in the region.
The teams paid a courtesy call at City Hall yesterday morning.
All 17 teams have already arrived from Bohol, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Dumaguete, Iloilo and Northern Samar, and are billeted in hotels in the city and at the Piapi Elementary School.
Games in all divisions will start 7 a.m. today at the Rusi Ball Field. Championship matches will be held on Sunday.
The top two teams will compete in the national finals in Cabuyao, Laguna against the top teams from Luzon and Mindanao. The ultimate winners will represent the Philippines in the Asia Pacific championship in Singapore.*RG
