Fair trade forum in Bacolod today

AlterTrade Philippines Inc. will hold a Producers-Consumers Forum in celebration of World Fair Trade Day today at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel in Bacolod City.

AlterTrade said in a press release yesterday that the forum aims to promote understanding and establish producer-consumer relations towards building a Producers-Consumers Real Food Movement.

The theme for this year’s World Fair Trade Day is “Live fair, one Fair Trade product at a time”. It was initiated by the World Fair Trade Organization to recognize the contribution of fair trade to the sustainable development of small producers, the press release said.

The guest speaker at the event will be Natasha Ericka Siaron, program officer of the Fair Trade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers-Philippine Association. She will discuss principles and development of fair trade globally, it also said.

Other speakers at the forum will be those who have been AlterTrade’s partner producers from various communities in Negros Occidental, who will share their challenges and achievements.

They are Daniel Diamante, Dama Farm Workers Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Assocation chairman, from La Castellana; Reneboy Sombria, Baligwan Agro Foresters Association chair from Patag, Silay City; and Joel Pasigado of the Mercedes Farmers Irrigators Association in Bago City.

Expected to attend the forum are 24 Negros producers and 100 invited consumers.

AlterTrade has been partnering with Negrense sugarcane producers and balangon banana growers in the country to produce products, such as mascobado sugar, balangon bananas, and diversified fresh farm products, the press release said.

The company is also in the works to create the Producers-Consumers Real Food Movement for food safety, food security, and food sovereignty, it added.*MLG
