1 killed, 4 injured

A woman was killed and four others were injured when the Canter vehicle they were riding was fired at Sitio Balawbolawan, Barangay Nangka in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental, at about 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The police identified the fatality as Gloria Cornel, who was declared dead on arrival at the Bayawan District Hospital. The three other passengers who sustained gunshot wounds were Elsa dela Cruz, Romeo Siacol, and Ronelyn Nebres, while Agripino Billo sustained a fractured left arm.

Initial investigation showed that kagawad Renante Cadayday, who owned the vehicle, was driving it on his way home to Barangay Kalamtukan, Bayawan City, with nine others on board, when two unidentified suspects fired at them, using .45 caliber pistols.

They were fired at while the vehicle was negotiating an uphill climb in Sitio Balawbolawan, and this led to Cadayday to lose control of the vehicle, and running over Cornel, who had jumped from the vehicle after the first burst of gunfire.

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo condemned the attack, and has tasked the police to probe deeper so proper charges can be filed against the perpetrators.

He said he believe that Cadayday was targeted because he is a contender for the barangay captain post in Kalamtukan.

This is the second attempt on the life of Cadayday, who is a last termer kagawad. The first was on March 2016.

Bayawan City police chief, Chief Insp. Mike Aydoc, said that according to Cadayday, he has no plans yet of running for barangay captain and that he has no enemies in the barangay.*
