DPWH constructing
P40M city esplanade
BY CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

The Department of Public Works and Highways-Bacolod District Engineering Office is constructing a P40 million esplanade project in Bacolod City.

Bacolod District Engineer Abraham Villareal said the half kilometer esplanade project will start from the Lupit Bridge along the Circumferential Road up to the Bacolod City Government Center.

Once completed, it will be similar to the one in Iloilo City, which can attract promenaders including local and foreign visitors, he said.

Villareal said they hope to finish the esplanade project by October, and they envision it to become a tourist attraction in Bacolod City.

“The project was visualized by Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar since we have legal easement in our riverbanks that can be developed into a place where people can promenade and also serve as a park,” he said.

Villareal said the idea of Villar was supported by Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya and Mayor Evelio Leonardia so this project materialized.

This will greatly boost the tourism industry of Bacolod City, although this has no participation from the Department of Tourism, he said.

The general concept of the esplanade is to provide a place where people can “promenade” and enjoy a good scenery, Villareal said.

There are many esplanade projects in Iloilo City and he hopes that with the forthcoming fiscal year of the DPWH, they can build more esplanade projects so they will be able to catch up with Iloilo, he said.

Villareal said they will be turning over the esplanade project to the local government that will maintain it and provide an ordinance to prohibit any illegal vending in the area.

The masterplan shows that the esplanade will have benches and lighting facilities, railing for the safety of promenaders, and blocks to make the area more attractive. A bike lane may also be provided, he said.

Meanwhile, the DPWH - Bacolod District Engineering Office obtained a perfect rating of 100 percent after being recognized for its good maintenance work together with the Kabankalan District Office and the District Office of Iloilo City in Region VI.*CGS
