The New People’s Army is expected to mark its 49th founding anniversary on March 29 by staging more atrocities, a military official said yesterday.
Capt. Eduardo Precioso,3rd Infantry Division spokesman, warned the public in Western and Central Visayas to remain vigilant , and take precautionary measures,in line with the NPA anniversary.
This terrorist organization is known for staging terror and criminal activities against helpless civilians especially before and during their anniversary, Precioso said.
In 2017, the 3ID reported that NPA rebels mercilessly slaughtered 10 civilians in two Negros provinces, aside from the six policemen they had killed during an ambush in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.
From 2010 to 2017, the CPP-NPA murdered 46 civilians, including those in the notorious La Castellana massacre, where eight civilians and a policeman, died in an ambush, that was claimed by the Leonardo Panaligan Command of the NPA, Precioso said.
“Propagating atrocities in the communities is like a requirement for them (CPP-NPA) that will be announced in their accomplishment report during their anniversary celebration,” he added.
Precioso said the 3ID infantry units stationed in different provinces of Western and Central Visayas are on a “high state of vigilance” ahead of the NPA anniversary.
But he warnedthe civilians of NPA atrocities, of which they are vulnerable targets.
The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office is calling on Negrenses to be vigilant, even during the celebration of the Lenten season.
Senior Supt. Rodolfo Castil, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, said they are intensifying their police visibility operations by establishing assistance hubs and deploying personnel in bus terminals, ports, malls, churches and other areas of convergence.
The Lenten season this year starts on March 25, which is Palm Sunday, and will end April 1, Easter Sunday.
Lawless elements are just waiting for an opportunity to strike, Castil said, as he vowed not to tolerate violence during the holy season.
Brig. Gen. Dinoh Dolina, 3ID commanding general, in a statement issued by 3ID Public Affairs Office, has called on the CPP-NPA to give peace a chance, instead of celebrating their so-called “accomplishments”, apparently referring to their criminal activities.*GPB
