The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. paid P41.8 million in insurance coverage to about 9,000 farmers in Negros Occidental last year.
PCIC Neg. Occ. head Jose Maria Torres said P41,755,457.83 was paid to 8,980 Negrense farmers in 2017, covering 8,368.62 hectares.
He said this coverage was for several calamities that hit the province, like typhoons, floods, pests, and crop disease infestations in the farm areas.
The records also showed that 21,724 rice farmers with 21,910.98 has. of land were also covered in insurance last year, Torres said.
Last year, a total of 27,879 farmers and fisherfolk also availed of the Accident and Dismemberment Security Scheme program where PCIC gives them insurance coverage of P50,000 annually.
Under this program, Torres said that P1.35 million was also paid to beneficiaries of 27 individuals who passed away but were enrolled in it.
Torres said earlier that they are continuing to accept insurance enrollments from farmers in Negros Occidental.
He said that about P350 million in full insurance premiums for farmers, fisherfolk, and livestock raisers in Western Visayas, under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture of PCIC, will be allotted in 2018.
The P350 million is part of the total P3.5 billion premium allotted by the government this year for RSBSA, under the General Appropriations Act.
With Region 6 having P350 million, about P70 million in premium subsidy will go to Negros Occidental, he added.
This year’s budget is bigger than last year’s, when Western Visayas had P267 million and Negros Occidental was allotted P52 million out of the P2.5 billion for the whole country.*MLG
