The National Economic Development Authority-Western Visayas will come up with a program this year that will treat a family as an economic unit where more will get an opportunity to earn and meet the needs of every member.
Regional Director Ro-ann Bacal told the DAILY STAR that this plan will be adopted this year to ensure that it is not only the ‘breadwinner’ who will earn to meet the needs of every family member.
“Every member of the family should help, there should be more members working to meet their needs as a family,” she said.
Bacal was in Bacolod Wednesday as a member of the panel in the consultation on wages. NEDA isthe vice chair of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board.
During the consultation with the representatives and leaders of labor groups from Panay and Negros, she said there are many programs that treat families as an economic unit.
This program is primarily intended for the families of sugar workers in haciendas, especially in Negros Occidental, she said.
“The program intends to make sure that hacienda workers do not depend only on the wages they earn, but on other means for generating more income for their families,” Bacal said.
The program will not only make employment one of the options to earn more, but also starting a small business or offering services, she said, adding that this is an opportunity to give the other members of the family a chance to help provide the needs of the family.
Bacal said that they will “conceptualize the program and meet the requirements to make it a reality and put itinto place.”
She said they will need the help of various agencies to make sure that they are on-board on planning and implementing the program.
After the proposal and consultations with several government agencies, they will present it to the labor leaders in the region to find out if they are amenable to it, Bacal added.*MLG
