Cobra beats Talisay
in overtime, 84-82

 

Shakeys/La Carlota-Cobra Plus Smart survived Talisay Miggies- Tanduay Ice in overtime, 84-82, while Team POC/Rain or Shine-Manila Beer escaped with an 88-85 win against Young Lions-Beer na Beer Strong in the 1st phase of the quarterfinals in Class A of the Fil-Sino Basketball Asia Brewery Cup at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Covered Court Monday night.

Cobra played catch up in the fourth quarter and had to rely on the steady play of Allen Dela Gente as he scored to force overtime at 71-all.

In the extra time, Nicole Antiporda of Talisay Miggies scored on a 3-point play while Ryan Hugnatan converted a jumper for an early lead but Marfel Gaitan scored 4 points and Dela Gente knocked down a triple to grab the advantage at 80-78.

Bonbon Posesion scored the last 6 points for Talisay, but a Montalvo layup and a De La Gente free throw sealed a Shakeys victory to advance to the next round.

Dela Gente finished with 16 points, Gaitan added 14, Montalvo shot 13, Harvey Eslawa drilled 11 points and Alejandro Arandesmade 6 points.

Talisay Miggies was led by Hugnatan with 24 points while Posecionshot 22. Irvin De La Peña dropped 16 points and Antiporda finished with 13.

In the second game, the Young Lions led at the half, 52-43, but POC bannered by Joemel Paderog and Alvin Buñol rallied to give their team the lead at 66-58.

Young Lions responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to a single point, but Rain or Shine was able to hold on the lead at 73-69 going to the final quarter.

Young Lions caught up at 75-all, but POC slowly built its biggest lead in the quarter on a Ryan Maningo jumper, 82-75

Refusing to fade away, the Young Lions got closer at 82-84 as Rimor Taronas fired 4 points.

Maningo and Chad Paez restored the lead back to 5 points but a triple from Bambam Gilbor once again drew the Young Lions closer.

POC committed a turnover with 14.8 seconds to go but the Young Lions missed on their 3-point attempt to bow out of the tournament.

Buñol led POC with 21 points, Paderog added 17, Jerald Abrot shot 13, Peewee Demonteverde made 10 points and Maningo had 8 points.

Gilbor paced the Young Lions with 21 points, backstopped by Taronas with 17, Arman Pepino, Jayvee Alic and Dondon Delima contributed 9 points apiece.*
