A boat captain died, and his assistant and two members of the Iloilo Bantay Dagat were injured, in a commotion at the Panal Reef in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, Tuesday.
Vivencio Espinosa, boat captain, was declared dead on arrival at the Lopez District Farmers Hospital in Sagay City, while his brother, Jonel, who was reported in critical condition by the police, was later brought to a hospital in Bacolod City, for further treatment.
Chief Inspector Robert Mansueto, Sagay City police chief, yesterday said that two members of the Iloilo Bantay Dagat were also injured in the commotion.
Sagay City police investigation showed that a fishing vessel engaged in “hulbot-hulbot” operations, that is banned by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, was intercepted by the combined teams of Bantay Dagat personnel of Iloilo, policemen and BFAR personnel, at the territorial waters of Concepcion, Iloilo.
The fishing vessel owned by Joeny Espinosa, with 17 crew members, fled towards the territorial waters of Sagay City, and was chased by the Bantay Dagat.
Mansueto said a commotion ensued after Bantay Dagat and BFAR personnel, and two policemen boarded the fishing, that led to the stabbing of Espinosa, alias Buranoy, 40, and his younger brother, Jonel, alias Balatong.
The arrested fishermen claimed that the commotion was started by the Bantay Dagat, Mansueto said.
Mansueto said the 15 other boat crew members and the fishing vessel were brought by the Bantay Dagat back to Iloilo.*GPB
