Army: Don’t give in
to NPA extortionists
BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division yesterday urged businessmen and private contractors not to give in to extortion demands of the New People’s Army in Negros Island, as it will help further strengthen rebel forces.

Maj. Gen. Dinoh Dolina, 3rd Infantry Division commander, made the appeal after noting a series of arson activities perpetrated by communist rebels in central Negros in the past several weeks.

The NPA had recently claimed the burning of a farm tractor, two cargo trucks and a heavy equipment in La Castellana, Moises Padilla, and in Kabankalan City, in Negros Occidental, as well as in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, respectively. moremoremore

Murcia 1st in Visayas to get
brown rice milling facility
BY MARK L. GARCIA

A farmers’ association in Cansilayan, Murcia in Negros Occidental, can now produce and sell its own pigmented rice after the Philippine Rice Research Institute turned over to it a brown rice milling facility yesterday.

It is the first area to receive the equipment in the Visayas, under the Rice Business Innovations Systems (Rice BIS) community program.

About 40 rice farmers in Cansilayan are expected to benefit from the Philippine-made Impeller Rice Mill Technology, or the Brown Rice Facility, that could mill specifically pigmented or colored rice varieties, which are suited for use in Negros Occidental that is described by PhilRice as a good source for black and red rice.
