Comelec set for satellite registration

The Commission of Elections will conduct satellite registrations in nine selected barangays in Bacolod City every Saturday from July 21 to September 15.

The satellite registration in Bacolod City will start Saturday in Barangay Estefania.

This will be followed by satellite registrations in Barangay Granada on July 28, Barangay Felisa on August 4, Barangay Handumanan on August 11, Barangay Bata on August 18, Barangay Taculing on August 25, Barangay Vista Alegre on September 1, Barangay Alangilan on September 8, and Barangay Cabug on September 15.

Bacolod City Comelec Officer Mavil Majarucon-Sia, yesterday said the choice of barangays for the satellite registrations was based on which one they consider to be far away from the city office.

“The purpose of the satellite registration is to bring the registration closer to the people,” Majarucon-Sia said. “We’re conducting this so that they don’t have to spend for their fare to go and register since it will just be within their barangay.”

Majarucon-Sia said that another reason is to avoid the influx of people during the last day of registration. She said she has observed that most voters don’t register within the first two months of the three-month registration period and often register on the last day.

“There is no longer a reason to wait until the last day of registration,” Majarucon-Sia said. “Since we’re bringing the registration to them, they can no longer reason that they registered late because of the fare going to the office, or because they didn’t know about the registration earlier.”

Comelec is also reminding voters that, because of the scheduled satellite registration, they will no longer conduct simultaneous registration on Saturdays at the Office of the Election Officer.

Registration will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and this includes satellite registrations, until September 29.

As of Friday, about 2,185 Bacolodnons have registered with the Comelec-Bacolod.

The continuing voter’s registration for the coming May 2019 national and local midterm elections started on July 2 and will continue until September 29.*SCL
