A suspected jeepney pickpocket, who allegedly victimized an elderly woman at Lacson Street-BS Aquino Drive in Bacolod Monday, and was captured in a video that went viral on Facebook, has not yet been identified.
Chief Insp. Benedicto Villarias, Police Station 2 commander, said yesterday that the suspect is not a resident of the area, and they are coordinating with other police stations to determine whether she has other criminal records.
The video posted by Arthur Mendoza showed an elderly woman in a Bata-Libertad jeepney searching for her wallet, whilethe suspect who had a hematoma-like mark on her left eye, was sitting beside her with crossed arms.
The suspect toldthe elderly woman that maybe she had dropped her wallet. The victim searched and found her wallet being heldby the suspect.
The victim took the wallet but the suspect, who claimed she owned it, grabbed it from her, and threw it outside the jeepney.
Some of the passengers tried to stop the suspect as she alighted from the jeepney, but she was able to escape on foot. A traffic enforcer apprehended her when the jeepney passengers shouted that she was a thief, but she was released when she took off her shirt to show that she had not taken anything.
A passing motorist picked up the wallet from the pavement and gave it to the elderly woman.
Villarias said the traffic enforcer should not have allowed the suspect, who was operating alone, to flee so she could be invited to the police station.
The video that aimed to identify the culprit and warn other commuters, had at least 22,720 shares up to last night.
Villarias said that since a crime had been committed, he is calling on the complainant to go at the police station socharges for theft can be filed against the suspect, once identified.*SGG
