Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said that if House Bill 5875 proposed by Bacolod Rep. Gasataya succeeds in Congress, then June 18 will become the Charter Day of Bacolod City.
But if it does not, they will still continue to observe June 18 as the commemoration of the signing of the Charter Day of Bacolod City, he said.
Leonardia, however, said that, if they are using the statement of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines that Oct. 19 is the Charter Day of Bacolod, he wants to check with the commission in case they don't know all the circumstances.
Bacolod Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., had earlier pointed out that the Charter Day anniversary of Bacolod is on Oct. 19 based on the position of the NHCP.
Gasataya had filed House Bill 5875 Declaring the 18 th Day of the Month of June Every Year a Special Non-Working Public Holiday In the City of Bacolod to be known as “Bacolod City Charter Day,” last June 2017.
Leonardia said Gasataya relayed to him that the bill to observe June 18 as the day Bacolod was chartered, has already been approved at the committee level.
He also pointed out that the movant when the Bill was approved in the level of Congress was former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who they believe, comprehended the situation.
“She was former president and knows quite a lot. So we should give great weight and due consideration to her position,” Leonardia said.
In the meantime, let things take their course. They will wait and see how this will develop, he said.
“But personally, I reiterate my belief that it should be June 18,” Leonardia said.
He also said he believes that the time to correct it is now that thecity will be celebrating its 80 th year, he added.*CGS
