High school student killed,
drug user injured in strafing

A high school student died, while an alleged drug user, who surrendered to the Oplan Tokhang campaign of the police, was injured in a strafing incident Friday night in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, the police reported yesterday.

Elnica Arroz, 18, who succumbed to head injuries, was declared dead on arrival at the Elumba Medical Clinic in La Castellana. Her employer, Rene Saludares, was also injured, the police said.

Moises Padilla police investigation showed that three unidentified suspects, armed with M-16 assault rifles, went to the house of Saludares in Sitio Upper Mamballo, Brgy. Quintin Remo, Moises Padilla.

Police investigation further showed that Arroz may have been hit by stray bullets, after the suspects fired at Saludares, without any provocation.

Senior Inspector Alfred de Leon, Moises Padilla police officer-in-charge, raised the possibility that Saludares was the target of the suspects, who spared other persons outside his house.

De Leon confirmed that Saludares was among the drug suspects, who surrendered to the Oplan Tokhang campaign of the Moises Padilla Police Station. He could not establish yet, if the incident was drug-related, although they are following some leads in their investigations.

Eight empty shells of an M-16 rifle were recovered at the scene of incident.

Arroz, who was a helper of the Saludares family, is a junior high school student. Her education was being financed by the Saludares family, who live in the mountainous barangay, that is about 10 kilometers away from the town proper.*GPB
