La Salle Zobel U18 spikers win
Manila-Negros volleyball crown

De La Salle Zobel girls' volleyball team beat Living Stones International School in four sets, 25-14, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-16, to capture the title in the 1st Manila Negros 18 under Volleyball Invitational Championship held Jan. 17-20 at the Msgr. John liu Activity Center at St. John's Institute in Bacolod City.

In the battle for third place, Talisay City prevailed over host team St John's Institute in a thrilling 5- setter, 25-14,22-25,23-25,25-8, and 19-17.

The Cristina Salak mentored DLSZ topped the single round elimination with six wins while runner-up LSIS, Talisay Selection and SJI finished with an identical 4-2 card. LSIS advanced to the finals against DLSZ due to a better quotient.

Named as tournament Most Valuable Player and Best Outside Hitter was Justine Jazareno of DLSZ, while Cassie Carballo of LSIS received the Best Setter award. Best Blocker was Angel Anne Canino of DLSZ while named as Best Server was Vanessa Gandler of DLSZ. Shaira Mae Jardio of Talisay City received the Best Libero award and Matet Espina, got the Best Opposite citiation.

The tournament also drew participation from Pontevedra Selection, Foundation Preparatory Academy of Dumaguete and Assumption College San Lorenzo Makati.

This competition was the initiative of SJI and DLSZ, with the organizers looking forward for more teams to join the second season.*
