For Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Bacolod's cityhood 80 years ago was instrumental in the growth it was posted since then until the present.
As Bacolod City celebrates its 80 th anniversary this year, Leonardia is urging Bacoleños to know more about their city and be part of the dream to make it as a premier one.
Leonardia, with the other city officials launched the year-long “Bacolod @ 80” celebration yesterday at the Bacolod City Government Center.
“The growth of the city is at a stage where it is unprecedented… we need to be on full speed ahead,” Leonardia said at a press conference.
The cityhood of Bacolod was signed by former President Manuel Quezon on June 18, 1938 by the virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 326, enacted by the National Assembly.
The mayor said Bacolod was one of the few areas that were made intocities during that time, and that is a factor that affects the growth of any area.
During the press conference he also highlighted the increasing tax collections in the city, business confidence, the awards and recognitions given to Bacolod, and surpassing Iloilo City's budget this year, adding that the Bacoleños should ride on this momentum.
The celebrationthat will take place for the whole year, was mandated under the Executive Order No. 1, Series of 2018 entitled “Creation of the Organizing Committee to Steer and Manage the 80 th Anniversary Celebration of the City of Bacolod in 2018”.
The yearlong activity will signify another milestone for Bacolod, Leonardia said.
During the launching, City Administrator John Orola also announced various activities in line with the 80 th celebration this year, that will also encourage more Bacoleños to come home.
Under the E.O., the celebration theme is “Full Speed Ahead to the Next 80 Years” and aims to recall and celebrate the significant events in Bacolod, bring home as many ‘Balik-Bacoleños' as possible this year, inform the people about the role of the city government in pursuing inclusive growth, and secure support and participation from the people of Bacolod.
One of the activities proposed during the celebration is “Love koang Bacolod”, “A Tourist is a Friend”, and the realization of the Bacolod City Museum.
Regular festivities of the city will also be anchored on the anniversary celebration.
Private companies and non-government organizations were also encouraged to participate in the activities planned for the 80 th anniversary of the city.
An organizing committee led by Leonardia was also formed to supervise of the overall concept and organization of the celebration, the EO also state.
Leonardia said that leading the organizing committee for the 80 th anniversary celebration is “sentimental,” as, 30 years ago, he also led the 50 th anniversary celebration.
The celebration is co-chaired by Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, while Orola is the overall vice-chairman, Councilor EmAng will be the executive director, Councilor Cindy Rojas as deputy executive director, and Imogene Kanaan as secretary.
Members of the organizing committee are Edward Cuansing, Mary Jean Ramos, Federico Guanzon, Danny Dangcalan, and RodelParcon.
A council of advisers was also formed through the EO composed of Rep. Greg Gasataya (Lone District of Bacolod), and councilors Caesar Distrito, RenecitoNovero, BartolomeOrola Sr., Ann Marie Palermo, Dindo Ramos, Elmer Sy, Sonya Verdeflor, and NoliVillarosa.
Leonardia also stressed that this year will not just be used to celebrate, but also to be a time to intensify the sense of patriotism for Bacolod.
“We would like the people to know the city deeper,” he said, adding “We would like the people to be proud of the city and be part of the dream to make Bacolod a premier city.” * MLG
