Policemen and operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency seized an estimated P6.8 million worth of suspected shabu from a “habal-habal” driver during a buy-bust operation Tuesday night in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
Supt. D'Artagnan Katalbas, San Carlos City police chief, yesterday said the arrest of Christian Unabia, 29, yielded 593.5 grams of suspected shabu, with a market of P6.8 million, P24,960 in cash and P30,000 in marked money.
Katalbas said the buy-bust operation took place at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the residence of Unabia, alias Beboy, in Sitio Juan-ong, Brgy. Palampas, San Carlos City.
San Carlos City police investigation showed that the arrested suspect is a “new player” in the distribution and selling of shabu in San Carlos City, and being a “habal-habal” driver was a front of his illegal activities.
Police investigation further showed that the prohibited drugs being repacked have also been distributed in the neighboring areas of San Carlos City, as neighbors of Unabia had also noticed him being visited frequently by motorcycle-riding persons even during unholy hours.
Katalbas said Unabia attempted to escape, by fleeing from his police captors, towards a ravine behind his house, before he was apprehended.
Unabia and some policemen, who were pursuing him, suffered minor injuries during the brief chase, as they stumbled on stumps in the area.
Senior Supt. Rodolfo Castil, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, said yesterday that the accomplishment was also in response to the call of Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. to exert more efforts in police operations.
This accomplishment is a simple way of showing gratitude to President Rodrigo Duterte for our salary increase, Castil, who lauded the San Carlos police and public safety police personnel for a job well done, added.
Unabia now faces charges for violation of Sections 5 and 11 of RA 9165, or the Comprehensive Drugs Act of 2002. He is now detained at the custodial facility of the San Carlos City Police Station.*GPB
