Twinkling
with Ninfa Leonardia
OPINIONS

Kudos to Ceres-Negros!

Ninfa Leonardia Now Mayon Volcano is really getting serious. Yesterday's media – print broadcast and TV – were full of pictures of the Philippine pride in all its fury and splendor, shooting smoke and ash described to be as high as 10 kilometers! If the residents within its area have not yet fled for their lives, they must be the suicidal ones who would not mind being roasted to death, both by hot lava and ashes. Residents of Albay should be thankful that science has so advanced now that it can predict the tantrums of active volcanoes like Mayon, and our own Kanlaon in Negros Island.

But it is not only Mayon that has been acting up, and also, not only Kanlaon. In Papua New Guinea, an island volcano also erupted Sunday but since the place is not heavily populated, there seemed to be no big problem about danger to human beings. However, both air and sea crafts have been warned against getting near the island because of the erratic nature of its eruptions. At least we in Negros should be thankful that our Kanlaon seems to have quieted down, and let's pray it continues that way.

That was quite rash statement from the President, as published in the national media yesterday. He ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines to shoot him if he overstayed his tenure as president, even for just one day. And he said this while addressing the AFP and PNP forces. But will any of them take him seriously? And will he later tell them, like House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez that he was joking only? What we should be afraid of is if he had said he will shoot himself, because that's another story.

Aren't you worried when you hear that President Duterte has warned Joma Sison that he will slap him when they meet? I thought he had been wanting to talk again with the head of the Communist Party of the Philippines, for several years now, being ensconced in the safety of the Netherlands. I can hardly wait to know how Joma will react to Duterte's challenge. For sure he and his members, the ones on the ground back home are also waiting to see what happens after his taunting.

Are British men drawn to women who have African blood in their veins? Note that England's Prince Harry is now engaged to a movie actress who openly admits to have African ancestors. Meghan Markle, who has been going steady with Prince Harry for years now, has been accepted by Buckingham Palace, and their wedding is set in April. And the Britons appear to be happy about the union, and are treating Ms. Markle like the movie star she used to be. The wedding is sure to be another grand event that will get international focus, just like those of previous royals like Prince William's and his parents before him.

And there's another romance also involving an Englishman and a girl with colored roots. The daughter of former U.S. President Barack Obama, Malia, is now dating a Briton, identified as Rory Farquharson and the relationship looks serious, too. That could be another popular wedding – if it happens, although Malia still looks too young to be contemplating marriage. But who can tell? Our elders have a term for it in Spanish: “Mejorar la rasa”, meaning, improve the race. Which is what could be happening, couldn't it?

Maybe they are not getting enough applicants so the National Police Commission has removed the requirement for height of would-be policemen. However, there seems no mention about a weight requirement, which is one problem that is very obvious in our cops today. Fortunately for them the incumbent PNP chief is not very particular about the girth of his cops, unlike now Senator Ping Lacson who had strictly implemented a weight and girth rule. So his cops had to watch their waistlines, and be required to lose weight, or else. But maybe there is an easy and effective way to trim the fat off the country's policemen. And that is to require them to go on foot patrols day and night to shed off those pounds, and not keep them sitting in the office or in the patrol cars.

Wow! What a great honor for our province and city has been brought by the Ceres-Negros Football team by their conquest of Brisbane Roar last night with a 3-2 score in Queensland Australia. The win means they could possibly also reach their goal of playing in the Play-offs of the AFC Champions League. This is truly an achievement because this is the nearest a Philippine football team had ever gone that far. No wonder our officials and residents are all ecstatic over it! Here's wishing them more success in their next endeavor!*
