The runway concreting of the Kabankalan airport in Negros Occidental, is getting P60 million more from the Department of Transportation, Mayor Isidro Zayco announced yesterday.
This was on top of P30 million earmarked last year by DOTr for the runway concreting, making it a total P90 million coming from the national government, Zayco, who led the 42nd Sinulog Festival celebration, said.
He said the city government of Kabankalan has been working for the realization of the airport for several years now, also with assistance coming from the Negros Occidental provincial government.
The 105-hectare airport, the development of which is financed by the city government of Kabankalan, started in 2007.
Zayco said the provincial government also allocated P30 million for the airport, while the city government of Kabankalan has a standby P50 million budget for it.
All in all, the Kabankalan airport has a total budget now of P170 million for its development, including the P90 million counterpart funds from the national government.
Zayco said he told DOTr to include the P80 million budget of Kabankalan City and provincial governments, as they have the expertise and technical know-how in runway concreting.
In August last year, the rural airline company Air Juan Inc. started its operations at the Maricalum Airport in Brgy. San Jose, Sipalay City.
Negros is now linked to Cebu and Iloilo, through the commercial flights of Air Juan. *GPB
