Cops kill rape suspect

The police yesterday invoked “self defense” in the killing of a rape-slay suspect, who they said, also opened fire on them Thursday night in Brgy. Himoga-an, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

Chief Inspector Rolly Pondevilla, Escalante City police chief, said yesterday that the rape suspect he identified as Jojit Miñosa, shot the policemen pursuing him for his alleged involvement in a rape incident Wednesday night in Brgy. Balintawak, Escalante City.

Fortunately, nobody among members of the Escalante police were hit. But this prompted the police to return fire, hitting and killing Miñosa, Pondevilla said.

A 357 caliber revolver was taken from Miñosa, he added.

Pondevilla said that what the Escalante police did was a last recourse, stressing that their lives were already in jeopardy and they acted in “self defense”, and in the fulfillment of their duties.

Escalante police investigation showed that Miñoza has been tagged as a prime suspect in the molestation and killing of a 21-year-old woman on Wednesday night

Pondevilla said their investigations showed that the 21-year-old woman went to buy a prepaid load for her phone at about 8 p.m. Wednesday and was not able to return.

The next day the her lifeless body was found in a sugarcane plantation in Sitio Liki, Brgy. Balintawak, Escalante City.

Through the help of the family of Miñosa, Pondevilla said they were able to track him down in Brgy. Himogaan, Sagay City, in coordination with the Sagay police, and this led to his neutralization.

Based on the result of the autopsy of the Scene of the Crime Operative (SOCO) of the PNP, the young victim had been molested, Pondevilla said.* GPB
