Councilor's son dies

What was to be a fun outing for the family of a Pototan, Iloilo, councilor ended in tragedy Saturday.
Ken Marion Peñaflorida, 7, died, and his mother Maureen Peñaflorida, 35, was injured when a centuries old Mahogany tree toppled by strong winds hit the front windshield of their Toyota Fortuner in Barangay Granada, Bacolod City, at about 1:25 p.m. Saturday, Chief Insp. Sherlock Gabana, Police Station 5 commander, said yesterday.

An alleged former secretary of the Larangan Gerilya 2 of the Komiteng Rehiyonal Negros was apprehended Saturday by combined police and military intelligence operatives in Brgy. 12, Bacolod City, for murder charges.
Capt. Ruel Llanes, 303rd Infantry Brigade spokesman, yesterday identified the arrested suspect as Isidro Castillo, alias Gesnar.
P76M allotted for Region 6
farmers affected by storms
ILOILO CITY - The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation 6 has allotted P76 million to indemnify farmers affected by three storms that consecutively hit different areas in Western Visayas, including Negros Occidental, in the last weeks of December until first week of January.
PCIC-6 OIC-regional manager Eva Ulie Laud said the storms Urduja, Vinta and Agaton have damaged a total of 11,054 hectares of land of 12,600 farmers in the region.
She said P51 million was allotted to compensate 7,966 farmers in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental, with a total 7,054 hectares damaged by tropical depressions Urduja and Vinta..
