Ceres-USLS on track to defend
Sagay Men's Open football crown

The Ceres-University of St. La Salle men's football team dominated University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 4-0, Saturday then turned back Sagay North Negros, 2-0, yesterday to strengthen their title defense bid in the 2 nd Sagay Men's Championships at the Sagay National High School.

A double from Kjay Gedor's and a goal each from Regie Brenn Cisneros and Ilemona Usman carried the defending champions past UNO-R during the opening day while La Sallians Tristan Robles and Klent Guevarra scored the goals that demolished the host Sagay North yesterday.

With the back-to-back wins, Ceres-La Salle took the No. 1 spot in the team standings followed by Sagay after the host squad edged UNO-R, 2-1, and got away with a 1-1 draw against Ateneo de Manila University.

A 2 nd minute goal from Jerald Paparon followed by another marker from Jimuel Ariola in the 17th gave Sagay an early 2-0 lead. UNO-R made it interesting with a Paul Ancheta goal in the 40 th minute but Sagay managed to protect the lead in the second half to secure the win.

Against the visiting Ateneo squad, both teams were scoreless in the first half but William Jay Grierson struck in the 53 rd minute to break the ice and gave the Blue Eagles the lead.

Undaunted, Sagay kept their focus and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 78 th minute courtesy of Jasper Aguado. The match ended in a 1-all draw.

Ateneo bounced back with a 3-1 win against the Negros Selection behind a goal of Christian Michael Castillo and a double from Reno Fekliz. Joseph Gerard Poe's own goal was credited to the Negros Selection.

Villa Angela shares the No. 3 spot with Ateneo after shutting down Negros Selection, 3-1, behind the goals of veteran Aldrin Dolino and Philippines Football League campaigners Jaime Poderoso and J Bagiuoro. Adonis Abela scored for the Negros Selection.

The match between UNO-R and Villa Angela ended in a 2-2 draw.

The tournament, aimed at promoting football in the province, particularly in Northern Negros, has the support of the Negros Occidental Football Association and the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.

The top two teams after the elimination round will advance to the finals.*
