The 2 nd Sagay Men's Open Football Championships opens today with Villa Angela FC playing against the Negros Selection in the first match at the Sagay National High School.
Vill Angela, the reigning Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) Men's Open champions are hoping to get past Villa Angela to strengthen their bid for the tournament's crown this year.
In the second match, tournament defending champions Ceres-University of St. La Salle will take 2017 NOPSSCEA first runner-up University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos FC.
In the afternoon, host-Sagay North Negros Football Team will be challenged by visiting Ateneo de Manila University – the Season 79 UAAP champions.
Now on its second year, the football tournament in Sagay City hopes to tap football talents from Sagay and give them the opportunity to join the collegiate varsity teams in Bacolod City and in Manila, Sagay City sports coordinator Benzon Fernandez said during yesterday's press conferece at the Balay Kauswagan Hotel.
“Through this tournament, we hope to promote Sagay City not only as a sports destination but a tourist destination,” Fernandez said.
Joining him at the press conference are the head coaches of the six competing teams, including Ceres-USLS mentor Norman Fegidero and UNO-Recoletos head coach Carlo Torbela.
Both Fegidero and Torbela said that the through will help them strengthen their respective squad for future competitions.
Meanwhile, for Ateneo, the competition in Sagay will serve as a tune-up for next month's UAAP Season.
The elimination round of the tournament will be played until Jan. 9 with the top two teams advancing to the finals on Jan. 10.
