LTFRB 6 recommends P9 PUJ fare

Regional Director Richard Osmena of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has recommended a P9 fare rate for public utility jeepneys in Western Visayas.

The current fare rate is P6.50 but commuters pay P7 per ride, while students, senior citizens and persons with disability pay P5.

“The petition was for a P10 fare, andthe National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Trade and Industry wanted P8 so I recommended P9,” Osmena told the DAILY STAR yesterday.

The final decision on the WV fare rate is up to the LTFRB central office, he added.

He said among the factors that were taken into consideration in recommending a fare rate increase were the current prices of basic needs and fuel.

Diego Malacad, secretary general  of the United Negros Drivers and Operators Center, said the transport sector had asked for a P10 fare but a consumers and commuters alliance in Panay asked that it only be P8, so they agreed on P9.

However, with the annual tax increase on fuel under the   Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law, a petition for another fare rate increase is likely to be sought again next year, he said.*CPG
