“Let the fire of freedom be lighted”.
That was the cry yesterday of the Federation of Urban Poor (FED UP) in Negros Occidental whose members marked the 32 nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution with a prayer rally in front of the Ninoy Aquino monument at Araneta Street in Bacolod City yesterday morning.
Joy Jarabelo, FED UP provincial coordinator, said they take inspiration from the words of Ninoy Aquino who said “ When you condone tyranny my friends, you share in its corruption and tyranny.”
“We in FED-UP, we choose not to allow tyranny. We choose the ways of righteousness and freedom,” she said.
Participants in the prayer rally carried placards that said “Sa pederalismoangmgaharimanginemperador! (with federalism the king will be emperor)”, “Promisangapagbag-o naginkalbaryo (Promise of change became calvary)”, “AngPilipinasmanginprobinsyasa China? Katraidorannaya!(The Philippines aprovince of China? That is traitorship )”, “Cong Alvarez kag Sen. Pimentel mgaidoniDigong (Cong. Alvarez and Senator Pimentel dogs of Digong,” and “TRAIN law pabug-at sapigado (TRAIN law a burden for the poor)”.
Jarabelo said the EDSA people power revolution is worth celebrating because it showcased the best in the Filipinos who stood for freedom.
“Freedom is worth defending as it defines our existence. Thus we choose not to live in fear, we celebrate EDSA . We were the inspiration of the world in 1986. Three years after, Berlin wall was broken down,” she said.
“However the irony now, Filipinos have made a much taller and stronger wall with the disunity, division and hate among us. Because this administration foments hate and fear. For us in FED-UP, we choose not to live in fear”, Jarabelo added.*CPG
