President Rodrigo Duterte was in Negros Occidental last night for a close to 5-hour private visit at a residence in a posh subdivision in Talisay City, a DAILY STAR source confirmed.
Duterte arrived via helicopter from Iloilo at the Bacolod Silay Airport at about 7:09 last night and proceeded to a home at Ayala North Point in Talisay. The president departed for Manila at 12:08 a.m. today on board a Challenger 350 jet.
The president had flown to Negros after condoling with the family of Joanna Demafelis, an overseas Filipino worker who was killed in Kuwait, in Sara, Iloilo.
The president had dinner with theYanson family, owners of Vallacar Transit, at the residence of Emily Yanson. Vice Governor Eugeno Jose Lacson was also in attendance.
Media groups that camped out outside the subdivision were not granted interviews.
The Talisay police was tasked with securing the boundary between Bacolod and Silay, Supt. Adonis Rosales, Talisay police chief, said
Government Service Insurance System president and general manager Jesus Clint Aranas, a Negrense and close ally of the president, would not confirm the presence of Duterte in Negros.
He, however, confirmed that he is theappointed president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakasng Bayan in Negros Occidental. Aranas is also the national treasurer of the PDP Laban chaired by Duterte.
He said the choice of the PDP Laban bets for Negros Occidental in the 2019 polls will be decided in Negros based on party rules. The filing of certificates of candidacy is expected in October.
Yves Akol, PDP Laban Negros Island secretary general, yesterday also confirmed that Aranas was appointed party president of Negros Occidental, and Gov. Alfredo MarañonJr. is the highest elected official of the party in the province.*CPG
