Aranas heads PDP Laban in province

President Rodrigo Duterte was in Negros Occidental last night for a close to 5-hour private visit at a residence in a posh subdivision in Talisay City, a DAILY STAR source confirmed.

Duterte arrived via helicopter from Iloilo at the Bacolod Silay Airport at about 7:09 last night and proceeded to a home at Ayala North Point in Talisay. The president departed for Manila at 12:08 a.m. today on board a Challenger 350 jet.

The president had flown to Negros after condoling with the family of Joanna Demafelis, an overseas Filipino worker who was killed in Kuwait, in Sara, Iloilo. moremoremore

football brawl probe

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday requested Department of Education (DepEd) officials in the province to investigate the brawl during the Neg. Occ. and Iloilofootball secondary boyschampionship match at the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet in Iloilo City Wednesday.

Lacson said he is hopeful the DepEd will come up with their own version of what happened and update the provincial government about the incident.

He said a lot of stories are coming out in the social media and has created a conflict among social network users of Iloilo and Negros. Lacsonadmitted that he himself was informed through a text message about the incident, thus, he was simply receiving raw information. .moremoremore

‘Basyang' ruins
P8.4M in crops

Crop production losses for rice and high-value commercial crops (HVCC) in Negros Occidental,brought about by typhoon Basyang, hit P8,417,774.45, a report from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, covering the period Feb. 13 to 21, showed yesterday.

The losses have affected 922 farmers covering 714.10 hectares in 34 barangays andin four cities and two towns, Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said in the report.

Affected in San Carlos City were 176.25 has.of rice worth P1,890,300, and 7.50 has. of HVCC worth P401,250, Bago City - 411.40 has.of rice valued at P4,254,900; .
