An official from a group of tourism educators in the country urged future tourism practitioners to put more passion in pushing for sustainable tourism in Western Visayas.
Xander Kim Sigua, executive director of the Tourism Educators and Movers Philippines (TEAM PH) said in an interview yesterday that there is a need to push for sustainable tourism, especially because it is one of the major economic drivers in the region.
TEAM PH organized the annual #7NEWJUANDERS2018: The Seven New and Enterprising Ways of Growing Philippine Tourism Awareness and Local Economies national summit at L'Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City.
About 1,200 tourism and hospitality management practitioners, students, experts, and stakeholders from various regions in the country attended the event.
Sigua said that they are organizing events like this to create more tourism-oriented Filipinos to help attract more tourists to visit the country.
“This is a venue where tourism students and educators are united in one agenda of improving tourism initiatives,” Sigua said, adding, “The government alone cannot do it, the support of the entire community is needed to develop tourism.”
#7NEWJUANDERS brought in seven outstanding Filipinos or ‘Juanders' from various industries to talk about seven New and Enterprising Ways (NEW).
Sigua said NEW primarily focused on community-based tourism and the speakers discussed their advocacies in helping the community.
Among the seven ‘Juanders' who spoke at the event were IdeaSpace Foundation executive director Diane Eustaquio, Plus63 Design Co. founder Dan Matutina, Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum Carlo Delantar, restaurateur Margarita Fores, Cropital founder Ruel Amparo, Futuristic Aviation and Maritime Enterprise Inc. founder Junjun Fetizanan, and FrontLearners founder Elaine Velez.
They discussed Startup Revolution, Redesigning Thinking, Sustainable Design, Culinary Reinvention, Financial Technology, Seal Safety, and Education Innovation.
The TEAM PH executive director also said that they want to emphasize that tourism is not mere traveling but also the capacity to be oriented on how to accommodate tourists, and what tourism activities their respective areas can offer.
Nearby countries are aware of their tourism. Filipinos tend to forget the important aspect and technicalities of tourism, Sigua said.
He challenged future practitioners to put tourism in their hearts and for them to be advocates to sustain it to boost the industry.
TEAM PH, together with The Dream Project PH, led the one-day event, in partnership with the Provincial Tourism Office, Department of Tourism-Western Visayas, the Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, and 034 Creatives.*MLG
