Briones joins NSPC
BY RENE GENOVE

Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones opened yesterday the 2018 National Schools Press Conference at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City.

Dubbed as the “Olympics of Campus Journalism”, the Schools Press Conference will gather the best student-journalists from the 17 regions all over the Philippines.

Close to 5,000 campus journalists from public and private elementary and secondary schools from all over the country have arrived since February 15 at the different billeting schools in Dumaguete.

This year's official theme is "Embracing ASEAN Integration: Campus journalists' role in advancing inclusive education."

The campus journalists will compete in three categories: 1) Individual, which includes News Writing, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, Science and Technology Writing, Photojournalism, Editorial Cartooning; 2) School Paper, which includes having the best section in News, Features, Editorial, Science and Technology, Sports, and Layout and Page Design; and 3) Group category, for Radio Script Writing and Broadcasting, Collaborative Desktop Publishing, and TV Script Writing and Broadcasting (for secondary level).

Two contests are for exhibition purposes, Column Writing and Online Publishing.

The thrust on ASEAN Integration highlights the responsibility of education to improve the lives of the people, help ensure No One is Left Behind, and that everyone is prepared to face the opportunities of the economy of the Association of South East Asian Nations.

The program requires that education must ensure employability to guarantee that the youth will benefit from the regional economic integration. The youth must be ready for the jobs that will be created, and that schools work with the business sector to equip the students with the skills and competencies required by the regional market.

The annual national writing tilts will be graced by central office officials led by Briones, regional directors, assistant regional directors, schools division superintendents, assistant schools division superintendents, other regional and division officials, and local government officials. It is hosted by DepEd Region 7 and the Schools Division of Dumaguete City.*
