A barangay captain from Negros Oriental is now in jail, after he was arrested Saturday night at a police checkpoint in Brgy. 4, Kabankalan City, for illegal possession of firearms.

Arrested was Jerry Vargas, 59, identified by the Kabankalan police as the barangay chairman of Pandanon, Mabinay, Negros Oriental.

The apprehension of Vargas yielded a .45 caliber Safari Arms pistol with a magazine containing seven live ammunition. . moremoremore

More eco-tourism initiatives
in Neg. Occ. pushed: official

Six more local government units in Negros Occidental are now drafting ordinances to create their own local conservation areas (LCAs) to push more eco-tourism initiatives for the community this year, coordinator Pierre San Jose of the Provincial Environment Management Office said yesterday.

San Jose said 11 LGUs in Neg. Occ. have already passed ordinances creating LCAs while six more are in the process of establishing their own.

The creation of LCAs is one of the initiatives of PEMO to encourage environment conservation by creating conservation areas that will also open sustainable economic opportunities for the community, Senior Environment Management specialist Maria Elena San Jose said..
