A sugarcane field overseer died, after he was shot by policemen at 4 a.m. yesterday in Sitio Balea, Brgy. Laga-an, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
The victim identified as Bolbet Leyte, 42, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead on arrival at the Calatrava District Hopsital by Dr. Ellen Lumanog, the police said.
Troopers of the PNP Special Action Force 3rd Provincial Mobile Force Company were conducting a joint combat operation when they engaged in a shootout with Leyte, a resident of the barangay and an appointed member of the Lupon Tagapamayapa.
Investigations of the Calatrava police showed that Senior Inspector Eduardo Lambayong and his fellow SAF troopers heard a group of men talking near a nipa hut in the place.
Chief Inspector Joel Batusbatusan, the town police chief, said in his report submitted to the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office that while approaching the nipa hut, the police troopers saw a man, who was carrying a flash light and a .38 caliber revolver, come out suddenly from the nipa hut, and shoot at them.
However the gun of the man, who was later identified by the Calatrava police as Leyte, a sugarcane field overseer of Archel Suelto, misfired. This prompted the police troopers to return fire, hitting Leyte, who was killed, Batusbatusan said.
Lambayong also reported that some unidentified persons scampered away from the scene of incident.
A loaded revolver was recovered at the scene, reports of the Police Regional Office 6 showed.*GPB
