Iloilo is ready to host this year's Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meet that will kick off Sunday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
Dr. Roselyn Lanuza, regional sports and accreditation committee co-chair, said that some 3,688 participants are expected for the weeklong sports event composed of 2,953 athletes, 490 coaches, 79 assistant coaches and 163 chaperones.
They will be competing in 25 sports disciplines to be held in various venues within Iloilo City.
Dr. Victor de Gracia, assistant regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas, said that they are “looking forward to the successful holding of the WVRAA 2018”.
He underscored that the staging of the sports event is “very significant” amid the technological age where children are so engaged with gadgets and their connection and interaction with their fellow students and teachers have lessened significantly.
“This is being filled up by activities like sports meet where the interaction is enhanced, their interpersonal skills are developed. The most important skills this 21st century is interpersonal skills,” he said.
Meantime, he said that this year's WVRAA would be very exciting with the “strong participation of the strong Negros (Occidental) contingent”.
Negros Occidental did not join the WVRAA for two years due to the creation of the Negros Island Region. However, NIR was dissolved last year and Negros Occidental reverted back to Western Visayas.
De Gracia said that their participation has brought to a higher level the competition. Adding to the excitement he said is the participation of the “very competitive” Negros Occidental and “equally competitive” Iloilo.
“I am sure we will be getting the best athletes that will do better during the Palaro,” he added.
Delegations have started arriving in this city on February 12. They are billeted in seven schools in the city.
Various committees formed to oversee the WVRAA assured that proper preparations have been done to ensure the success of the sports event.*PNA
