Negros Occ. athletes
leave today for WVRAA

The Negros Occidental delegation to the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet will leave today for Iloilo, three days before the opening of the annual competition.

The delegation, composed of 519 athletes, 101 coaches, 32 chaperones and 35 trainors, will leave in two batches onboard a Ro-Ro vessel via the Bacolod - Dumangas route. They will be billeted at Lapaz 1 Elementary School.

Negros Occidental DepEd Provincial Sports head Romeo Sison the athletes and delegation officials will join the opening ceremony at the Iloilo Sports Complex that will start 3 p.m. Sunday.

With the P12 million budget allocated by the provincial government for the province's participation to the WVRAA 2018, Sison said the Negrense athletes will be sporting brand new uniforms during the parade.

Expected to attend at the opening rites are provincial officials from the six participating provinces – Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Gumaras, Negros Occidental and host Iloilo. Keynote speaker during the program will be Department of Education Assistant Secretary Revsee Escobedo.

Negros Occidental did not see action in the WVRAA in 2016 and 2017 during the two-year existence of the Negros Island Region. The province, which will compete in 15 sporting events in elementary division and 22 events in secondary level, is expected to reclaim its position on top of the medal tally board.

Sison expects a tight competition between Negros and Iloilo in athletics, where both provinces excel.

“For two years that we were not in the WVRAA, we have seen how the athletes in Panay have improved. It will be an exciting competition this year,” he said.

Aside from the allowances provided by the provincial government, Sison said the WVRAA medalists from Negros Occidental will receive cash incentives. They will also join the 2018 Palarong Pambansa in IlocosSur under the banner of WVRAA.*NAB
