President Rodrigo Duterte last night called on local government officials from Visayas and Mindanao to continue to work with him to put an end to corruption and drugs that ruin the country, and assured them that he will not seek an extension of his term as president with the amendment of the Constitution.
“We're all government workers. I called you because I need your toil. I'm not pleading for it. It's your duty for the country,” the president told about 200 governors and mayors, including those from Negros Occidental, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City.
Bacolod Mayor EvelioLeonardia said the audience was very attentive as the president reiterated his goal to rid the nation of drugs and corrupt officials to make the country comfortable for all.
In his speech, Duterte who is pushing for CharterChangefor a shift to federalism, promised the local officials that he will not seek any term extension.
“This is my commitment to you. If you can pass that (constitutional) amendment by 2020, and will call for an election, I will not accept the transition period for me to remain as president,” he said.
“To remove all doubts, I will step down. There's no problem with that…
If I don't, shoot me. It's your job to preserve the Constitution,” he told the military.
Duterte, who again warned the local officials against corruption and engaging in the illegal drugs trade, said if they do so he will go after them.
“I'm not threatening. I just want to remind you,” he said.
“I am here, I will stop corruption. I will do it, and then stop illegal drugs. I will work on peace and order, and talk to enemies of the state and have an agreement so that we can pass through this planet peacefully,” Duterte vowed.
The president promised local officials and the police full support in the war versus drugs.
The president also warned of brewing trouble with intelligence reports of the regrouping of terrorists cells in Cebu and Mindanao. He said he cannot allow that to happen because he took an oath to protect the country.
He also assured the local officials that it does not matter whom they supported for president in the last election, they can always go to him for help.*CPG
