Only Camanjac out of the 30 barangays in Dumaguete did not endorse a resolution of support for the proposed construction of a sanitary landfill in Brgy. Candau-ay, Dumaguete.
The Liga ng mga Barangays, headed by Bunao Barangay Captain Lionel Banogon, conducted its regular monthly consultative meeting last week, and approved Resolution 2018-01, that endorses the proposal.
The barangay captains said they believe it is high time the city establishes its own SLF because the open dumpsite in Candau-ay is becoming a health hazard, aside from violating provisions of the Solid Waste Management Act.
Several closure orders have been received by the city, starting from previous administrations, and it was even ordered by the Environment Management Bureau to pay a penalty of P2.514 million, for failure to establish an SLF.
Mayor Felipe Remollo said he was not want this problem to be passed on to another set of officials.
He said he is thankful for the support of the 29 barangay captains to put an end to the open dumpsite in Candau-ay, and will make sure that all the requirements are compliant with existing environmental laws.
Remollo said he understands the predicament of Camanjac Barangay Captain Bartolome Aranas, who did not sign the Liga's favorable endorsement of the project because, he was among the petitioners against the construction of SLF in neighboring Candau-ay.*JG
