OBO to inspect call centers

The Office of the Building Official will inspect Panasiatic Solutions, Teleperformance, and Transcom, and those that pass the inspection will be issued an annual inspection certificate, its head, Isidro Sun Jr., said yesterday.

He said OBO conducts an annual inspection of call centers in Bacolod City, except those that are under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

He said they cannot inspect call centers that are under the PEZA, and those do not pay the building or renovation permit with the city.

If Ayala Mall will register with PEZA, it will not fall under the jurisdiction of the OBO, he added.

Sun said they will also inspect small call centers that have been sprouting in Bacolod.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia had earlier requested newly-installed Bacolod fire marshal, Chief Insp. Publio Ploteña, to review the fire safety policies and preparedness of all the call centers in Bacolod City, following the tragic fire incident at the NCCC Mall in Davao on December 23, which claimed the lives of 38 workers.

Leonardia said he also encouraged the holding of regular fire drills following reports on the Davao incident that their fire safety measures were questionable, including the physical structure.

He said they want to avoid any untoward incident in the call center industry, which he considers as one of the crown jewels of Bacolod, with an estimated 28,000 employees.*
