GMA and her sharks

Ninfa Leonardia

The first bill filed by the new House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a bill for the protection of sharks. House Bill No.7912 has already gone through first reading, probably one of the fastest-moving measures. Now, what kind of sharks do you think she wants to protect? Not the human ones of which we hear many are in Congress?

The bad news about a lot of Filipino workers in Kuwait must have affected those who may have been planning to work there, too. As of now, reports say that less Pinoys, or Pinays, are applying to work there, and that may be all for their good. Nobody wants to hear again of our people being maltreated, starved, raped, or even killed and left in freezers. Maybe the Kuwaiti government is trying to adopt measures to ensure the protection of our workers there, but it sounds as if some employers there still consider their househelp no better than slaves.

Top-ranking members of the Communist Party of the Philippines are indignant over the announcement that a P1 million bounty is being offered for their capture. That is not surprising because, for sure, they consider themselves worth much more than that. But Malacañang has denied that it had anything to do with the bounty offer. Then who was willing to give out that amount, just to catch the four leaders mentioned?

The four mentioned, and whose pictures were even published in a national daily were Satur Ocampo, Liza Maza, Teddy Casiño and Rafael Mariano. By the way was the P1M offer for each one of them, or the lot of four? How cheap naman. How come no offer was made for the Big Man himself, Jose Ma. Sison, or Joma? I guess he is priceless to the movement, despite what a Security official, Gen. Esperon, is saying about his health condition.

Welcome home to a dear friend who is now a resident of both Paris, France and Bacolod City! Home for his regular visit is Edouard Garcia, who surprised us a few days ago by popping us with his usual thoughtfulness. Life in Gay Paree must agree very well with our former columnist who now owns property in Paris that keeps him commuting all year round. But life there must be good to dear Edouard, I’m sure he has never looked better, especially with that very becoming Parisian flair!

I am sure his friends here will be excited to see him because the social scene has been so different without him. And not only in Bacolod, but also in Manila where he is also very popular. I hope he stays longer in Bacolod, though, to give his many relatives and friends time to welcome him and enjoy his company. Despite his absence, the family home at Lacson Street continues to be as well-maintained as when he is home. Even his pet bird seem to be waiting for him!

Meanwhile, don’t be surprised if the news today says the bill that will implement the National Identification System has been signed into law already by the President. Despite some people questioning its benefits, I for one, believe it will be advantageous for us. Think of having only one card to tote around that will respond to so many of your needs for identification. I am sure law-abiding citizens will not take issue against it. Anyway, as of now, we have to acquire residence certificates, senior citizen’s cards, student’s I.D.s and all sorts of cards to confirm our identities. I believe this card is what we can call “One card fits all”.

It looks as if Metro Manila is still very serious about the “anti-tambay” rules that it had started to implement recently. Would you believe, some 96,174 “tambays” have been apprehended so far there, and not only for loitering, but even for going shirtless (maybe not anymore because of the constant rains and floods), drinking and smoking. And that does not include the minors, more than 12,000 of whom have also been apprehended for breaking curfew. Sounds a bit like Martial Law, no?*
