Smoke billowed from the third floor of the Plaza Mart building, at the downtown area in Bacolod City, and caused traffic congestion, at about 2:30 p.m. yesterday.
Bystanders gathered at the Bacolod City public plaza at Gonzaga Street while pointing to the window at the third floor of the Plaza Mart building, that turned out to be caused by a small fire.
Fire trucks of the Chamber, Amity, and Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protectionhad rushed to the scene, while traffic enforcers redirected the vehicles that were to pass Gonzaga Street to San Juan Street.
Two stores at the ground floor and several stores at the second and third floors decided to close.
After the fire fighters had cleared the area, operations at the building continued and vehicles were again allowed to pass by Gonzaga Street.
Chief Insp. Publio Ploteña, fire marshal of the Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protection, said an electrical short-circuit triggered the fire in an extension cord passing through a mannequin.
Security guards immediately put the fire out with the fire extinguisher, Ploteña said, adding that the establishment’s sprinkler system had activated.*SGG
