President Rodrigo Duterte awarded a Negrense fisherman in the outstanding fisherfolk (fish capture) category of the Gawad Saka Awards 2017, early this month at Malacañang.
Richard Aquino of Tortosa in Manapla town received the award for leading projects like propagating berried crabs and mangrove reforestation in the coastal area of their barangay, Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said yesterday.
Masculino said that Aquino is the first Negrense fisherman to receive such award and it is an indication that fisherfolk in the province are already learning to adopt new technology and adhere to marine conservation and environment protection activities.
Protection of berried crabs or ‘bukaka’ has been one of the programs of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., to help increase the number of blue swimming crabs, he said.
Aquino is the president of the Tortosa Pumpboat Association and Fisheries and Agricultural Resource Management Center in Manapla.
Apart from mangroves and blue crabs, Aquino has also implemented programs on creating the Social Security System’s (SSS) alkansya program in his association and participated as bantay dagat in the barangay.
Masculino also said that he hopes to have more Gawad Saka Awardees from Negros this year, as they have about 30 farmers, and fisherfolk who will be awarded during the Pasidungog sa Panguma, Pangisda, kag Pangkasapatan in the Panaad sa Negros Festival next week.
These provincial awardees will be the entries of the province in the regional Gawad Saka.
About 30 livestock raisers will also be awarded during the event where Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has been invited to lead the ceremony.*MLG
