The Bacolod Chicken Inasal Festival will be held on May 5 along Araneta Street in the city, as one of the events of the 80 th Charter anniversary of the city this year.
Bacolod Councilor Cindy Rojas, festival chairperson, yesterday said there are initially 30 establishments that signified to join the activity that will be held annually every first week of May.
They will set up a 300-meter long chicken barbeque grill in the middle of Araneta Street and the grilling of about 3,000 sticks of chicken will be held simultaneously starting 4 p.m., she said.
“The purpose of holding the festival is to highlight our very own chicken inasal,” Rojas said.
For the longest time, Bacolod has been known for its chicken inasal, she said.
“When you say Bacolod, it is synonymous to chicken inasal, that is why we want to highlight and give importance to our chicken inasal,” she added.
Rojas said they are trying to promote food tourism to invite people to come over to celebrate the Bacolod Chicken Inasal Festival.
Israel Salanga, overall event director, said the festival will be a one- day event only, being the first. The city will put up a grill from the Golden Diamond Jubilee Tower at the Bacolod Plaza to San Sebastian Street and there will be kiosks along Araneta Street, he said.
Salanga said this will be the highlight of the event and they are inviting active tenants of Manokan Country, who are engaged in the chicken inasal business, to join the activity.
Other events are the Zumanokan, a dance exercise competition for women who are 30 years old and above, as well as the Bacolod Chicken Inasal Hip Hop Dance Showdown at the plaza for younger participants, he said.
A boodle fight and inasal eating contest will also be held on the same day in front of the old City Hall, while two live bands will perform during a street party in the evening, Salanga added.
Rojas said the boodle fight will be participated in by about 300 to 400 people who will taste grilled chicken.
Senior tourism operations officer Sandra Ruth Sycip said Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and other city officials and guests will formally open the event with a boodle fight.
Rojas said if the festival will be a success, they will make a longer grill next year. They will not be joining the Guinness Book of World Records this year because they are apprehensive that it will not succeed and so they have decided to do it on a smaller scale.
The inasal festival has a proposed budget of P2 million but they will only be using half of it, she said.*CGS
