‘No rice shortage in NegOcc’
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

There is no rice shortage in Negros Occidental, we have a bumper crop, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

The governor, who was reacting to reports that the National Food Authority has run out of rice to sell, said there has been a huge harvest in the province with the good weather.

He said he believes that next year, Negros Occidental will already be 100 percent self-sufficient in rice.

“Our rice productivity per area has increased,” he noted.

He reiterated that Negros Occidental is already exporting Japanese and organic rice to Manila, which are in high demand.

Meanwhile, the governor said Negros Occidental does not have the capacity to absorb the tourists from Boracay when it is closed for an environmental clean-up.

“We do not have resorts to absorb the almost one million visitors of Boracay a year,” he said.*CPG
