Six teams in PFL to vie
for Cup title this season

The Liga Futbol Inc. (LFI), the governing body of the Philippines Football League, will launch this year the PFL Cup, to be known as the Copa Paulino Alcantara, to commemorate the Filipino and Barcelona football legend and his contribution of putting the country in the international spotlight.

A separate tournament from the PFL regular season, the winner of the Copa Paulino Alcantara will earn a seat in next year's Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup

The board of directors of Liga Futbol Inc. (LFI) approved the implementation of the midseason tournament pitting all the six PFL squads during the board's fourth meeting last week.

With defending champion Ceres-Negros FC ready to defend their PFL title this year, vying for the inaugural Cup crown are Kaya FC, Laguna Stallions, Davao Aguilas, Global Cebu, and JP Voltes Marikina.

Meanwhile, during the LFI meeting Araneta stressed the need for the PFL to move forward to enhance the league.

He said that the LFI is now on the process of securing a broadcast partner for this season of the PFL with the budget already approved by the board.

“We have approved a lot of things like the budget for the live coverage of the games and we hope the league and the clubs will benefit from it,” he said.

The broadcast will be a welcome addition to the league’s current live streaming platform by partner Sportradar and is expected to boost its viewership as well as its commercial value.

“We also hope that it will bring in more audience for us. Aside from our live streaming now, which is done by Sportradar, there will now be a live coverage that will can cater to more people,” Araneta said.*
