Palarong Pambansa-bound Trexie Dela Torre and Bernalyn Bejoy of the Negros Occidental secondary girls’ athletics team are competing in the 13 th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships which opens today at Thammasat University Sport Complex in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
Dela Torre, who won the secondary girls’ long jump gold medal during the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in Iloilo in February, will represent the country in the long jump event while Bejoy, will compete in the 400-meter hurdles at the Thailand tournament.
Bejoy, the reigning WVRAA secondary girls’ 400-meter hurdles gold medalist, along with Dela Torre are students of Romanito Maravilla National High School in Brgy. Estefania, Bacolod City. Both are accompanied in Thailand by their coach Addy Arca.
“We are thankful to the provincial government of Negros Occidental for sponsoring our participation here in Thailand,” Arca said in a message sent to the DAILY STAR.
She asked for prayers for the two athletes from Bacolod City and the other members of the team from the Philippines that they may be able to win medals for the country.
From Thailand, Arca said Dela Torre and Bejoy will rejoin the rest of the Western Visayas contingent for the 2018 Palarong Pambansa that will be held in Vigan, Ilocos Sur from April 16 to 20.
With their dominant performance during the WVRAA competition in Iloilo a couple of months ago, the Negros Occidental secondary girls’ athletics team is expected to win deliver medals for the region during the national games in Ilocos.
Despite the controversial results in secondary baseball and football, the Negros Occidental athletes are currently training with their counterparts from Panay Island for the Palarong Pambansa.
Before the dissolution of the Negros Island Region last year, Negros Occidental along with Negros Oriental, competed in the 2016 and 2017 Palarong Pambansa under the banner of Region 18.
Negros Occidental rejoined Region 6 (Western Visayas) this year while Negros Oriental returned to Region 7 (Central Visayas).*NAB
