Proper handling of animals
for slaughter urged
BY CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

A resolution requiring all animal establishments, such as slaughterhouses, poultry dressing plants, stockyards, and holding areas, that regularly handle animals for slaughter, to comply with the provisions of the Department of Agriculture Administrative Order 18, series of 2008, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod on March 26.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Bartolome Orola, said Republic Act No. 8485, amendedby RA 10631, or “The Animal Welfare Act of 1998”, provides that the killing of animals should be done through humane procedure at all times, which means the use of the most scientific methods available as may be determined and approved by the DA-Committee on Animal Welfare.

It said DA AO No. 18 applies to all animal establishments, such as slaughterhouses, poultry dressing plants and holding areas, which regularly handle animals for slaughter. It also applies to persons, companies, or entities engaged in the handling and slaughter of animals for food, and regulatory officers involved in the supervision and regulation of these activies.

The resolution said rules and regulations for the proper handling of animals before slaughter must be observed, as improper handling could have adverse effect on the quality of the meat.*CGS
