Twinkling
with Ninfa Leonardia
OPINIONS

E tu, Gloria?

Ninfa Leonardia Resigned na, impeached pa. That was the fate of Chairman Andres Bautista of the Commission on Election who had declared his intention to resign, when Congress beat him to it by impeaching him. They didn't even give the poor guy a chance to save face, they voted 137-75 to junk him. Now, wasn't Bautista the guy whose wife blew the whistle on him by revealing his alleged undeclared wealth, which he probably did not share with her? Well, this is a lesson to husbands, don't you ever forget that this has been so since the beginning of time.

Remember how Adam was ousted from Paradise because of his wife? Of course the situation was different, there was no Congress yet, they were the only human beings then, with everything at their command, when Eve suddenly got ambitious and taunted Adam into eating the forbidden fruit. But anyway, it looks as if the impeachment season is truly on. Note how many impeachment rumors are going on involving some of the highest officials of the land, like Supreme Court Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, and even President Duterte himself. But for the latter, I bet his supporters would brush off the talk by quoting the old saw about “Pag-itim ng tagak, pag puti ng uwak (when the heron turns black and the crow turns white)”.

My, what a season for turncoats this is also turning to be. And guess what members of various political parties are turning to? If you guessed the administration party, you'd be dead right. Even former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been sworn into the PDP LABAN. It appears that so many politicians are jumping towards the PDP LABAN of the president that party head Koko Pimentel has declared that they will only accept, er, turncoats, until November.

The Free Legal Assistance Group, or FLAG, is asking the Supreme Court to stop the war on drugs of President Duterte. But how can the High Court be of help now when it own head, Chief Justice Sereno is herself being targeted for impeachment, too? Her priority now must be t save her own neck, and, anyway, if the impeachment moves against her progress, she will no longer have the power to help them. They must start eyeing the person the President has in mind for her replacement.

No wonder President Duterte has not decided to have an official first lady. We all know that he is divorced from his wife, the mother of his sons and daughter. Now, we also know, since he isn't keeping it a secret, that he has a “partner” who, however, cannot carry the title of “first lady”. But it seems it is smart of him to insist on things going on that way. Look at the case of America's President Donald Trump who is also divorced, but is now married to another.

There was a hubbub in Washington, and perhaps all over the United States when his former wife, Ivana, authored a book telling about her life with the man who is now president of the country. During an interview, she cracked a joke that she is really a first lady, probably meaning that she was the first wife of Trump. That did not sit well with the model, Melania, who is acknowledged as the official first lady now that she is the wife, albeit, the second one, of Trump. Melania's camp is saying that Ivana is trying to get in the news to promote her book. Hearing that, all Ivana would say was that it was a “Joke only”.

So what will be the difference when the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency or PDEA, takes over from the Philippine National Police, or PNP, the war on drugs? Will there be less extra-judicial murders, I mean, killings? In the first place, why wasn't the PDEA given the task before? Would there have been less victims and less outrage over the alleged 3,800 or more that have been victimized in the previous “war” on drugs? Lately they are saying that some of the killings were done by vigilantes. Why do people smirk when they hear that?

***

It if is true, as some suspect, that the President was probably motivated to give the order to the PDEA by the results of his latest ratings, that is something to be thankful for. At least he is now reacting to feedback, something that he wasn't known to be before. Let us now watch how the PDEA will comport itself in this new assignment, that should gone to them in the first place.*
