Duterte holds off polls,
local officials relieved

Negros Occidental and Bacolod officials yesterday welcomed the signing into law by President Rodrigo Duterte of Republic Act No. 10952 postponing the October 23 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls to the second Monday of May 2018.

Under RA No. 10952 signed by the president Monday and released by Malacañang yesterday, all incumbent barangay officials will remain in a holdover capacity, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause, until their successors are elected and qualified.

The term of office of the barangay and SK officials elected under this law will commence at noon on June 30, 2018.

Comelec affirms
ruling vs. Monico

The Commission on Elections En Banc denied on Sept. 14 the motion for reconsideration filed by defeated mayoralty candidate Monico Puentevella seeking to reverse the order of the Comelec- First Division dismissing his electoral protest against Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Puentevella filed the motion for reconsideration after his electoral protest was dismissed by the Comelec First Division on Aug. 18, 2016 for insufficiency in form and content.

Duterte vows to impeach
chief justice, ombudsman

President Rodrigo Duterte vowed yesterday to have the Supreme Court chief justice and a special prosecutor impeached, as he defended himself against corruption allegations he said were aimed at ousting him.

Duterte accused Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno of corruption and alleged the ombudsman, Conchita Morales, was conspiring with opposition figures to bring down his government.

Morales' office has been investigating allegations that Duterte had secret bank accounts that recorded millions of dollars he embezzled while a long-time mayor of the southern city of Davao..
