Negros Occidental congressmen expect Congress, that is dominated by the allies of President Rodrigo Duterte, to approve his request to extend Martial Law in Mindanao until the end of the year.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, in a press briefing yesterday, said the President,in a letter to the leaders of Congress Monday evening, asked for the extension as the “existing rebellion in Mindanao will not be quelled completely by July 22,” the expiration of the 60-day period of the initial martial law proclamation.
The president issued Proclamation 216 on March 23 declaring martial law in Mindanao after gunmen waving black Islamic State flags occupied Marawi City, triggering clashes that have killed more than 550 people.
Noven's case
downgraded, bail granted

The Cebu City Prosecutor's Office has downgraded the case filed against Negrense "Tawag ngTanghalan" national grand champion Noven Belleza from rape to sexual assault.
The case against Belleza, 22, was downgraded by Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Ma. Theresa Casiño, enabling him to post bail.
The rape complaint was lodged against Belleza by a 19-year-old Cebu singer who had also been a Tawag ng Tanghalan contestant. She alleged that he inserted his finger into her vagina on Saturday.

Silliman exec named
DepEd undersecretary

Betsy Joy Tan, the vice president for academic affairs of Silliman University in Dumaguete City, was named undersecretary for Curriculum Development of the Department of Education, by Secretary Leonor Briones.
Tan replaces Dina Ocampo of the University of the Philippines College of Education, who resigned to go back to teaching.
The lone nominee for the position, Tan's appointment is awaiting the signed approval of President Rodrigo Duterte..
