The congressmen of the Negros Island Region will push for the allocation of funds for NIR during the 2018 national budget deliberations in Congress, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.
“We are very positive that, by next year, we will have a budget because 17 of our congressmen are working (for it),” he said, pointing out that House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and several senators are also supporting the NIR.
The Department of Budget and Management has not included a budget for the NIR in the 2018 budget. The NIR has been existing on the budgets of Negros Occidental and Oriental from their former regions in Western Visayas and Central Visayas, respectively.
NPA liquidation plot confirmed

The threat to attack several police stations, Army detachments and to liquidate retired Army intelligence operatives and a local government official by the communist New People's Army in Negros Island Region was confirmed yesterday by top military and police officials in the island.
Senior Supt, Rodolfo Castil, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said yesterday that precautionary measures have already been implemented and concerned individuals being targeted for liquidation were already informed.
Col. Eliezer Losañes, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said that they have also laid out the ground work on how to protect the individuals being targeted, as well as specific police stations and detachments, with sketches.

Teacher among 3 killed
in shooting incidents

Three men, among them a public school teacher, were killed in shooting incidents in the cities of Dumaguete and Bayawan in Negros Oriental Monday and yesterday.
Kim Timosan, a 35-year-old teacher of Cansig-id Elementary School in Bayawan, succumbed to a gunshot wound in the forehead Monday. He died while being treated at the Bayawan District Hospital, the police said.
Investigation of the Bayawan police showed that the assassin, described to be about 5 feet and 5 inches tall, whose face was covered with cloth, went to the house of the victim and shot him for no apparent reason. The gunman fled after the shooting incident..
