President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the suspension of peace talks between the government and communist rebels and will direct government negotiators to come home, Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said yesterday.

Duterte also ordered the arrest of all consultants of the National Democratic Front now in Oslo, Norway.

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, reacting to the move of the president, said “There are no winners in war, peace is the only option. Perhaps a suspension of the talks, if only to find ways to save it.” moremoremore

As cops ready for NPA attacks

Police mobile unit troopers in the Negros Island Region are now in “defensive mode”, and also bracing for the renewed tactical offensives of the New People's Army, following the lifting of the ceasefire last week.

Senior Supt. William Señoron, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, said yesterday that he is also re-aligning personnel assigned in the public safety units, in coordination with the Regional Public Safety Battalion 18 and the Army's303rd Infantry Brigade .

PDEA to intensify war on drugs

MANILA – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said the war against illegal drugs in the country remains unabated.

PDEA Director General Isidro Lapeña issued the statement yesterday to allay public perception that the intensified campaign against illegal drugs of the government has hit a snag following the recent deactivation of all anti-drug units of the Philippine National Police.

“PDEA will make adjustments in filling the gap left behind by the PNP by tapping other government agencies and the barangays as force multipliers to help in the national anti-drug campaign as provided by law,” Lapeña said..
